There are quite a few "free" rpg's out there that get pretty good updates and have content added regularly. The problems with those games are that the companies that make them support them either with ads OR by selling in game items. There are way too many to many to name, but you can check out quite a few here: http://www.gameogre.com/freemmorpgs.htm
Some are better than GW and some are not worth playing at all, but all of them use the term "Free To Play". What they actually mean tho is "No Monthly Fee".
I do not agree with most of the opinions you expressed in your post, in most cases I felt exactly the opposite of the opinions you expressed ; but lets put that aside because no matter how anyone feels about this update it is what it is, and A-Net didn't "have" to do anything so regardless of how I feel about this update in comparison to previous B-Day updates (which did rock and were free) it is something lol.
The reason that I quoted and commented on this particular line JR is because I DO agree with it. Guild Wars IS pretty good for a "FREE" (no monthly fee) game.........
The thing is, it used to a good game. Period.
Now the #1 selling point, and the only good thing I can say about it is that it is free. I miss the days when Guild Wars was great.
I am not coming back for GW2, and because of that the titles and stuff are really not especially important to me. It would have been nice to get a birthday update that really added some things to the game. Previous years featured fantastic updates that made huge changes to the economy and to the game; IE The original storage upgrades which were actually free, the addition of hard mode, the introduction of mini-pets (which had a huge effect on the economy and continue to do so) Previewable dye etc etc........
This year we got a new collector who offers lottery tickets............
I can't stand what A-net did to GW1 with Ursan Blessing, and I am very bummed that while other MMORPGs like WoW continue to expand both in content and playerbase, GW is getting ready to abandon GW and roll out GW2 so everyone who comes back can start from scratch, with at least a year before GW2 comes out it would have been nice to see a "real" content update for GW.

TBH $15 for a name change is just way too much... very few people will buy this.
I know ANet needs to make money from a "free" game, but putting such small things at such high prices will restrict the customer market to only the most fanatical players. Especially in this economical state, very few people will spend $25 dollars redesigning a character (name change + makeover). If the price were decreased to perhaps $5 for a name change and $3 for makeover, people would be much more willing to buy a thing or two from the store. A large portion of the population buying cheap things > an elite minority buying expensive things, IMHO.

I believe you currently get 5 of the regular makeover token thingies per pack, which is pretty reasonable...

I don't understand why people are complaining about this update.
We all get 1 free storage pane, as long as we remember our NCsoft passwords (ok, perhaps they should have done that a little different). We all can purchase equipment packs that hold 5 weapons or armor for a measly 2500 Gold.
Those people that need more panes can purchase them if they wish, Anet is not twisting our wrists, and those that want bigger bags can work for them (although, I think they need to adjust that somewhat)
People can now do makeovers, rename characters etc.... All stuff that we told Anet that we would be willing to pay for.
We did get free extra storage, so everyone should be happy here.
